Desalination What's that in the water?

Hayman has a desalination plant on the island. I just thought to share what I saw. I’m not an expert on desalination plants but I did find out a few things that were a bit troubling to a greenie and health nut like me.
First I’ll ask you one thing – where does the salt that’s been extracted from the water go?
I saw the answer to that question as I was stood overlooking Blue Pearl Bay at Hayman Island Australia at the stunning scene of the calm ocean glistening in the sun dotted with lush green tropical islands in front of me. In the water below me I saw a trail of what looked like a fine oil slick was gently resting on the water in a long continuous line.
You see, apparently the extracted salt gets washed back into the ocean and slowly what is happening is the water and earth around that area is becoming over salted. Naturally over time this will have some kind of affect on the habitat surely.
The problem that concerns me after talking to rangers on the island is not just the salt being released, it’s the fact that the chemicals used to aid the desalination process also get washed out to sea with the salt – that’s why the stream I saw in the water looked similar to a an oil slick (but without the black) just the familiar rainbow-coloured reflection of oily water.
Now for the health side affects of Desalinated drinking water…
The naturopath on the resort had made some interesting observations… those being that people who had lived on the island for a few months or more all started getting symptoms of bleeding gums and lips. Because of the extraction of salt to make the sea water drinkable good minerals and salts are also extracted too – minerals we actually need to be healthy!! So people end up with severe mineral deficiencies over time! I had noticed it happening to me after about two months living there drinking the tap water The water tasted really nice but after I found out what was happening I decided to look after myself and drink only bottled water.
What's your opinion of desalination plants as a means of water supply for islands around the world like Hayman Island Australia?
