Sting Ray Snorkelling Part 2 - Sea Slug
January 10th 2009 11:30
Sting Ray Snorkelling Sea Slug... the slug was fascinating to Maxine and she dove down to look closer. I floated on the surface and watched her reach out to pet it like a cat. She was totally taken by it. Then she swam up towards me and came to the surface. Taking her mouth piece out she said 'I’ve never seen one this big!' with an amazed look on her face. She was an experienced diver so she'd know. "Come down and see closer, it's got the most amazing colours" she said and before I could reply she's put her mouth piece back in and was gone. I dove down with her kicking my legs and then wham! My ears! Oh the pain. I quickly came back to the surface and wanted to cry. God my ears hurt.
First lesson in diving underwater - equalise you ears! No one ever told me that before and they had popped badly. Needless to say I was not impressed and unhappy to have the pain. I didn't know how to equalise my ears, Maxine showed me later but it was too late now.
I continued along on the surface of the water looking at the incredible coral and watching the parrot fish nip at the coral like birds pecking at rocks. They would float momentarily then peck the coral and like pendulums back, then forward to peck, then back to float and forward again, over and over.
The pain was not dying down but we were in open water and I really couldn't stop. It wouldn't help anyway to stop; it would take time to heal. I was just floating along now, not really swimming anymore because the current was not strong on this side of the island. I could just relax and watch the underwater scene unfold like watching a movie. Little fish darted around the bigger fish like little babies following their mother they seems to pick up the bits of coral the parrot fish didn't eat.
I pushed on more and saw something very big and slow emerge from the rock overhang. It was the biggest fish I’d seen yet. I big round black fish with a frown shaped mouth and fat looking lips and big beady eyes. I moved slightly closer, it saw me, and went back into hiding. I swam closer to look for it, but it was a shy thing and I never saw it again.
I paddle though more and more lovely coral warm tropical water until I was back to the beach we started at. What a trip! Australia is certainly an amazing place.
How to equalise your ears before diving - block your nose with your finger and thumb, close your mouth and blow out with out letting any air out. Presto, you're equalised.
