The Beautiful Whitsundays

The Whitsundays Islands.Have you heard of them? I thought everyone had but I’ve been realising they aren’t common knowledge to all tourists or even Aussies. They really should be though.
If you’re a backpacker looking for a party or looking for work you have to, no you need to know about them. They are a group of tropical islands in North Queensland that are the playground for holiday makers from all over the world and all walks of life (rich and famous included). Now, if you want to have a tropical island life but can’t afford the hotel all you need to do is work there!
The Whitsunday Island resorts depend on travellers to keep the resorts running. I’ve worked on 2 of the islands - South Molle and Hayman. And I could tell you some stories for sure. But that’s another day. I want to tell you some of what you can expect if you go there for work...
To sum up island life...
1. The pay is below what you’d make on the main land but the cost to live on the island is minimal compared to the mainland.
2. You can spend all your money at the staff bar or when you leave the island and go to Airlie Beach.
3. Gossip runs ramped around the staff quarters.
4. There are always a few parties every night in someone’s room or the staff bar.
5. You can use most of the resort facilities just like the guest do (mostly for free except for restaurant dining and some diving activities.)
6. Most the staff are single and under 30 but a small number are more ‘of age’ and have been there for years having learnt how to make the most of island life.
7. It’s like walking into a ready made family because everyone is so close in living quarters and everyone is away from their family.
8. Staff aren’t allowed to socialise with the guests when they aren’t working (unless they are senior management).
9. You can have a private picnic on a secluded look-out or beach when you go for a walk along one of the many walking trails. They are yours to enjoy and there are lots of quite places (except for Daydream Island - it’s pure resort with no natural bushland with bushwalking because it's such a small island).
10. The snorkelling is superb! The Whitsunday Islands are on the Great Barrier Reef, there are a lot of beautiful what are called ‘drop offs’ where for a small fee you can be dropped off on a deserted island or beach and get picked up whenever you tell them to come back (Like being lost on a tropical island with all the goodies you want with you and a promise of being picked up.) It’s important you go on a drop off or to Airlie Beach regularly and every one will tell you that, it helps you to not get island fever (not a real fever of course).
It is very unlike city life and more like a small town but with a younger population. Airlie beach is party town with every second building is a hostel or a bar. It’s super fun if you like to meet other travellers and sunbake a lot. To register or enquire about work check out Really Long Link and get in touch with the recruitment agencies listed. Enjoy
